When playing online slots, two numbers are worth understanding: return to player and volatility. Knowing them won’t guarantee wins, yet it makes your choices smarter. In this guide we explain both ideas in plain language, show how they work together and share practical tips for choosing slots with realistic expectations.
Understanding Return to Player
RTP stands for return to player. It is the percentage of all money wagered on a slot that the game is designed to pay back over a very long period, usually millions of spins. A slot with a 96% RTP is designed to pay back 96 for every 100 bet, while the remaining 4% represents the house edge.
The key words here are “on average” and “over time”. RTP does not tell you what will happen in your session. You will not get £96 back from every £100 you spend. In a single session, you might double your money or lose your entire budget. RTP only becomes accurate across an enormous number of spins played by many different players. Think of it as a long-term characteristic of the game, not a promise for tonight.
How High Should RTP Be?
Most modern online slots have an RTP between 94% and 97%. Around 96% is the industry average, figures above 97% are relatively high, and anything below 94% is on the low side. Classic table games often have a lower house edge than slots. For example, blackjack played with good basic strategy can return more than 99%, while European roulette has an RTP of about 97.3%.
An important detail is that some slots are released in several RTP versions. The same game can run at 96% at one casino and 94% or lower at another. This is legal and quite common, so it is worth checking the RTP in the game’s information screen at the casino where you play rather than relying on a figure you saw elsewhere.
Volatility Explained
Volatility, also called variance, describes how a slot distributes its wins. Two games can have exactly the same RTP but feel completely different to play. That difference comes from volatility.
- Low variance – frequent small wins, fewer long dry spells and a steadier balance. Good for relaxed sessions and smaller budgets.
- Medium variance – a balance between regular wins and occasional bigger prizes. A good all-round choice.
- High variance – long stretches without significant wins, but the potential for much larger payouts. Best for players who accept bigger swings.
Games with high variance often have large maximum wins, sometimes thousands of times the stake, but reaching them is rare. Many players underestimate how quickly a budget can disappear on a high volatility game during a cold streak.
Combining RTP and Volatility
RTP is about the long-term return, while volatility tells you how bumpy the ride will be along the way. A 96% low volatility slot and a 96% high volatility slot have the same long-term return, but your experience in a one-hour session will be very different. On the low variance game, your balance will probably move up and down slowly. With the second, you might see nothing for a long time and then a big win, or nothing at all.
For this reason it makes sense to match volatility to your budget and goals. If you want longer sessions from a modest budget, lower volatility games are usually a better fit. If you are chasing big features and accept higher risk, high volatility games may appeal, but only with money you are comfortable losing.
Finding the Numbers
Quality operators show RTP in the game information or help section. You can usually open it through an “i” or menu icon inside the slot. Volatility is less standardised: some providers show it as a scale of lightning bolts or a simple low, medium or high label, while others only mention it in the game description. Developers’ official pages are another reliable source.

Slot Myths You Should Ignore
- “A slot is due to pay.” Every spin is independent. Previous results have no effect on the next one.
- “Casinos tighten slots at certain times.” On regulated sites, game settings are fixed and tested. They do not change based on the time of day or your balance.
- “Higher stakes improve RTP.” In most games the RTP is the same at every stake level.
- “Bonus buy features always pay back more.” The RTP of a feature buy may differ, but they also increase volatility and cost per round significantly.
How UK Regulation Affects Slots
UK players should know that online slots are subject to extra rules. Autoplay is banned, there is a minimum spin speed, and features that give the illusion of control have been removed. Maximum stakes per spin are also limited: £5 for adults aged 25 and over, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24. These measures are designed to slow down play and reduce the risk of harm.
FAQ
Will a 97% RTP slot make me money? No. A higher RTP means a lower house edge over the long term, but short sessions are dominated by chance. The house always keeps an advantage.
Which is better, low or high volatility?Neither is better in general. Low volatility suits longer, calmer sessions; high volatility suits players who accept long losing streaks for a chance of bigger wins.
The Bottom Line
RTP and volatility are two simple tools that help you choose slots with your eyes open. Play what entertains you, check the numbers, set limits and take breaks. Casino games are entertainment, not income.
